Can you remove a deposit limit? What UK gambling rules say
Under RTS 12D a customer-led deposit limit rises only on your request, after 24 hours and a confirming step. Cuts apply at once. What the rules say.
Not instantly. Under the Gambling Commission’s RTS 12D, a customer-led deposit limit can only be increased at the customer’s request, after a cooling-off of at least 24 hours and a confirming action. The RTS 12 page this desk read does not say “remove”, so lifting a limit is in effect an increase. Reductions apply immediately, barring technical failures.
That answers can you remove a deposit limit in UK gambling, from the regulator’s own text. This desk read the RTS 12 financial limits standard, last updated 30 September 2026, on 3 October 2026, with the Commission’s 26 May 2026 extension notice. It moved phase two from 30 June to 30 September 2026, so June guides are out of date. Gross and net limits are compared in our explainer.
Can you remove a deposit limit on a UK gambling site?
RTS 12B guidance says the system must block further deposits once a limit is reached, until its period restarts or the customer acts to increase it, subject to the 24-hour cooling-off. The wait is explained in our piece on the 24-hour increase rule.
Can a bookmaker remove my deposit limit without asking?
The Commission’s blog on the changes adds that operators need not unilaterally move accounts with other limit types to gross deposit limits, and customers may keep those limits while that type is offered. The redress route is covered in our review of complaints and ADR.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn off my deposit limit?
Not instantly. The RTS 12 page this desk read does not use the word ‘remove’. Lifting a customer-led limit is, in effect, an increase, and RTS 12D allows one only at the customer’s request, after a cooling-off of at least 24 hours and a confirming action at its end.
Can a bookmaker remove my deposit limit?
Not a customer-led one on the wording of RTS 12D: such limits must only be increased at the customer’s request. The requirement covers limits customers set; this desk did not read rules on limits operators impose themselves. A limit that appears to have changed unasked is a complaint to the operator first, then the alternative dispute resolution route.
How quickly does lowering a deposit limit take effect?
Immediately, unless systems or technical failures prevent it, per RTS requirement 12D. Lowering a customer-led limit carries no cooling-off; only increases need the 24-hour wait and confirming action. Accounts with activity in a rolling 12-month period must be prompted to review their account and transaction information at least every six months.
